Introduction
People suffering from mental illnesses can get better over time and recover completely but their perceptions on recovery also affect their attitudes and perceptions. People recovering from mental illnesses face a challenge to gain independence and control in their lives. There are is no consensus on what is full recovery from mental illnesses but sufferers who have hope and work towards achieving their goals are mostly likely to recover since mental illnesses are different form physical ones, there is uncertainty even among healthcare practitioners on what entails full recovery. Hence, there is a need for better clarification and explanation about recovery while treating mental illness. Huiting (2013) argues that mental illness recovery is an ongoing process that is individualized and people overcome despite various challenges in the recovery process as they return to the pre-morbid state. The Walker and Avant’s method of concept analysis was used to explain the concept of recovery in mental illness.
The method of analysis
Concept analysis is a strategy to develop concepts, and the article uses Walker and Avant’s approach, which identifies an eight-step modification process. The approach focuses on qualitative concept synthesis to link a concept with the theory development. This makes it easier to identify knowledge gaps and inconsistency that exist in literature while also offering a better clarification to the phenomena of recovery in mental illnesses. Walker and Avant’s method was based on Wilson’s approach that identified 11 steps with the aim of improving communing and emphasizing clarity when using different scientific concepts (McEwen & Wills, 2012). The method was necessary to provide a more concise explanation that reflects the theoretical conceptualization of recovery in mental illness.
Steps of process
Huiting (2013) used the Walker and Avant’s method to breakdown the concept of recovery in mental illnesses beginning with the common definitions of the concept. The person works to improve their status to their previous state prior to metal illness. Besides selecting the concept the author determined the purpose of the analysis, the defining attributes and cases. In particular, the article identified the attributes that defined the concept to highlight the uses of recovery in both medical sciences and non health related fields. Additionally, there is the use of a model case with the aim of defining the attributes. There were related contrary cases thatwere identified, which do not have all the attributes of the concept.
Application of concept to practice situation
The concept of recovery is applicable in diverse scientific disciplines, where there is typically change to a better state, repossession of lost information and even to mean a rebound especially the economy. One common feature of recovery in different disciplines is that it requires some effort to bring about the positive change.
