Antibiograms And Infectious Disease
An antibiogram is a testing result which shows the overall profile of antimicrobial vulnerability of specific microorganisms after exposure to several types of antimicrobial drugs. The laboratory generates a profile while relying on aggregate data from the healthcare system or hospital (Minnesota Department of Health, 2015). The information is summarized periodically, and it details the percentages of organisms that have been analyzed, which are susceptible to the specific antimicrobial drug. The outcomes of the antimicrobial drug which are regularly tested and clinically beneficial are presented to care providers.
Based on the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), the antibiogram should be compiled at least yearly, including the initial isolate per patient in the time analyzed, and also the organisms which have equal or less than 30 isolates which have been tested during the time under analysis (Minnesota Department of Health, 2015). Microbiology laboratory technologists often create the antibiograms, but in some cases, they come up as a result of the collaborative efforts between infection preventionists, lab clinicians, and pharmacy (see figure 1).

The antibiogram can entail a single individual, an entire facility, or a healthcare system. Based on the patient level, the report will help doctors to determine the best antibiotics for patients. A sample is taken to the lab for analysis, where a technician analyzes it against a panel of antibiotics in different levels of concentration. This is important to determine the quantity of the drug that is required to kill the pathogen. The samples will also be checked if the pathogens are still growing. The tests' goal is to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), which is the minimum concertation of a drug that stops pathogen growth (Tascini et al. 2016). The pathogen is also categorized as suspectable based on the dose: resistance, intermediate...
