COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than two million deaths around the world. As of today, more than 98 cases of COVID-19 have been reported despite the efforts put by the World Health Organization in collaboration with scientists and other global health organizations to accelerate the pandemic response (Pascarella et al., 2020). Risk factors of this health problem have been attributed to older age and pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, severe asthma, and cancer (Pascarella et al., 2020). According to medical experts, the virus that causes COVID-19 infects people of all ages, but those above 60 years have a higher risk of getting severe (Lv & Lv, 2021). Similarly, individuals with underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and cancer are at higher risk of severity than individuals without pre-existing conditions.
Due to the increased severity of these two groups, the WHO has issued advice to ensure that they are protected from the infection without being stigmatized or left in a position of high vulnerability. This paper focuses on the role of risk factors in the outcome measures in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. The current rise of COVID-19 cases globally, together with the increased rate of deaths, indicates that the pandemic is a health problem in society. It shows that the primary effect of COVID-19 is high mortality rates in regions with the increased transmission. Economically, COVID-19 has reduced economic growth in many countries as most employees have lost their jobs during the pandemic due to the stay-at-home order implemented by governments to curb the disease's spread. These effects also demonstrate that COVID-19 is a problem in society. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explain the role of the risk factors in the outcome measures in patients diagnosed with COVID-19.
