Analyzing Assessment Data for Nursing Students

Essay Instructions:

Assessment data is a tool instructors can use to determine if students are meeting course or learning outcomes. Assessments can be utilized in many ways, such as student practice, student self-assessment, determining readiness, determine grades, etc. The purpose of this assignment is to analyze sample test statistics to determine if student learning has taken place.
To address the questions below in this essay assignment, you will need to use sample statistics provided in the textbooks. For Questions 1-4, use the sample test statistics in Chapter 24 of Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty. For Questions 5-9, use Chapter 11 in The Nurse Educator's Guide to Assessing Learning Outcomes.
In a 1,000-1,250 word essay, use the sample statistics data from the textbooks to respond on the following questions:
Explain what reliability is. Based on the sample statistics, is this test reliable? What evidence from the statistics supports your answer?
What trends are seen in the raw scores? How would an instructor use this information?
What is the range for this sample? What information does the range provide and why is it important?
What information does the standard error of measurement provide? Based on the data provided, does the test have a small or large standard error of measurement? How would an instructor use this information?
Explain the process of analyzing individual items once an instructor has analyzed basic concepts of measurement.
If one of the questions on the exam had a p value of 0.76, would it be a best practice to eliminate the item? Justify your answer.
If one of the questions on the exam has a negative PBI for the correct option and one or more of the distractors have a positive PBI, what information does this give the instructor? How would you recommend the instructor adjust this item?
Based on the sample statistics, has student learning taken place? Justify your answer with data.
Based on the sample statistics, what steps would you take to improve learning?
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Analyzing Assessment Data
Nursing education consists of both practical and theoretical training processes. Clinical education is a vital element in this professional learning, allowing students to acquire the right skills, knowledge, and patient care competencies. Like any other learning program, assessment is vital in professional nursing education. It ensures that nurses are competent and safe practitioners. Instructors evaluate the level of students' learning and performance. The assessment helps educators identify ways to enhance learning and improve learners' ability to help learners become self-directed and effective. This paper aims to evaluate sample test results to determine the efficiency of student learning.
Summary of statistics
They can use assessment data to determine whether or not the learners are accomplishing their learning outcomes. For test results to be useful in making decisions, this data needs to be interpreted. A total of 24 students took part in the test, which consisted of 100 items. The scores ranged between 48% and 92 percent, with the highest point value being 100. The mean score of this test was 72.690 and had a standard deviation of 9.813. The median score was 73, and the test reliability was 0.844. The test recorded a standard error of measurement of 3.872.
Reliability refers to the extent to which an assessment tool accurately and consistently measures learning. Reliable results mean that when an assessment is delivered again to the same participants under similar circumstances, you will reach almost the same conclusions. In the sample statistics, reliability was 0.844, meaning the test is reliable. A test is considered to have higher reliability when the reliability coefficient is close to 1.0 (Ferris& O'Flynn, 2015).
The raw score is the basic score on a test that analyzes the number of questions each student answered correctly. It also represents the items answered right out of all items on the test. The trends in this sample are measured using mean and median scores. They provide a numerical summary of the learner's performance. Instructors can use this information to express students' progress by converting the basic scores into standard scores. The range for this sample represents two scores in the distribution; the lowest and highest scores. It helps in determining the variability of the test score. For instance, in this case, the highest score is 92, while the lowest is 48. The range for this test is (92-48) = 48.
Standard Error of Measurement
The standard error of measurement estimates the error expected for a score on a particular assessment. All standardized tests are prone to error. Since changing conditions often affect performance, an individual taking a test today is likely to get a different score if the same test is administered next week. This sample's statistical data indicates an SEM of 3.872, a large standard error of measurement. Instructors can use this information to determine how close the sample mean score is to the hypothetical true mean score (Ferris & O'Flynn, 2015).
