Mucor is one of the most common fungal infections, usually affecting immuno-compromised individuals. Immuno-compromised persons are those with weak immune system especially those suffering from other diseases such as tumors, AIDs, diabetes mellitus, hematological insufficiencies, neutropenia and pregnant women among others (Gomes, Lewis, & Kontoyiannis, 2014). The infection of mucor in individuals occurs through airborne fungal spores normally found on human surfaces such as the skin. It occurs when the spores implant in the mucosa in the lower airways causing pneumonia. The health condition normally cause poor outcome to those infected as it interferes with the iron metabolism in the body. Iron supplied in the body sustains fungus survival, which in a way helps in the regulation of the mucor development in the body. However, the disease can be treated using iron chelator therapy although the treatment has not yet been proven. At the moment, the disease is still difficult to diagnose, which has made the condition be among the diseases with the highest mortality rate, when not diagnosed early. In order to successful diagnose mucor, some of the most recommended ways include the use of antifungal therapy, surgical debridement and proper control of other health complications that may compromise one’s immune system (Gomes, Lewis, & Kontoyiannis, 2014).
The signs and symptoms of mucor disease include sinus infections, mastoid, cranium and other infections of the osteomyelitis, pulmonary, and cardiopulmonary among others. Some of the appropriate nursing interventions for hospitalized muco- infected patients include isolating the patients to avoid infecting others, and educating family and patients on the importance of hands hygiene. The patients should also be supplied with adequate oxygenation, besides constant assessment of the respiratory status to ensure patent, airway as a way to promote quick recovery.
