Sexually active teens in the United States experience high rates of Sexually Transmitted Diseases. According to the recent statistics‚ the rates of STD’s in the United States is high among teens and young adults (Khan et al., 2012). This paper will discuss Pelvic Inflammatory Disease‚ Trichomonas vaginalis‚ and Syphilis in details. The causative agent will be clearly pointed out besides the signs‚ symptoms‚ the treatment‚ and the prognosis of the disease. The role that the nurses play in assessment will be also illustrated.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic Inflammatory disease is an acute clinical syndrome, which is commonly associated with a gradual spread of microorganisms‚ within the female genital tract. This is due to infection of the cervix with bacteria. Some of the bacteria include Chlamydia trachomatis‚ and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Mitchell, & Prabhu, 2013).
Discharge from the vagina is one of the symptoms‚ and its green or yellow in color. Pain that is mild in the lower and upper abdominal area‚ and in the stomach is part of the symptoms too‚ and pain during urination is experienced. Others are fever‚ and vomiting or feeling Nausea‚ PID also results to painful sex. Non-significant cases of the disease are treated with oral antibiotics. Cases that severe are treated with a combination of oral antibiotics and intravenous antibiotics (Mitchell & Prabhu, 2013).
Extremely severe cases can also result in the collection of pus in the infected tissue of the patient. Surgery in such a case is essential as it helps remove the particular organ that has pus. It is either done using a specific light and thin equipment called laparoscope‚ or a certain procedure that involves opening and viewing the whole abdomen. Constant occurrence of PID can render the infected individual infertile. It can also lead to pelvic pain that is chronic and pregnancy that is ectopic (Mitchell, & Prabhu, 2013).
Trichomonas Vaginalis
Trichomonas Vaginalis refers to an organism that causes Trichomoniasis. In men, they experience irritation inside the penis once infected‚ a dull or slight burning after ejaculation or urination. In women, they experience painful urination‚ irritation and constant itching of the vagina, which also produces a frothy discharge that has a greenish-yellow color.
