In your practice as a PMHNP, you may see many children and adolescents who are faced with challenges that go beyond the standard DSM-5 diagnoses. Children in foster homes or who have been adopted may have emotional scars from previous abuse or neglect; adolescents experiencing issues with gender dysphoria may be faced with peer and family issues; and children involved in acts of terrorism may face reoccurring fear and mistrust.
This week, you explore psychological issues that may arise in children faced with special circumstances and the assessment and treatment options specific to these special populations. You also take your final exam for the course.

The unprecedented rise of terrorist activities around the globe has proven itself not only as a national security issue but also as a psychological health issue whose harmful effects are just as complicated as it is long-term.
Despite terrorist activities being more common in parts of Africa and the Middle East, the struggle for new world order and the establishment of a non-Western hegemony has made first world countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, and France a prime target for terrorist groups.
I specifically chose the topic "Impact of Terrorism on Children" as it is often an issue rarely discussed in the fight against terrorism despite its' tangible long-term effects.
The literature on the psychological harms of terrorism often points to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD, with rates drastically increasing after terrorist attacks. Although several studies have documented the effects of terrorist attacks on children's mental health, very few have focused on younger children in the developmental ages of 0 to 6. There is a unique spectrum of responses to traumatic experienced by children in this stage. (Slone & Mann, 2016). A study of 58 children who witnessed the Beslan terrorist attack in 2004 concluded that direct exposure to terrorism shows long-term PTSD symptoms (Scrimin et al., 2011). Post Traumatic Play (PTP) has also been observed in Israeli children with direct exposure to terrorism. This "play" often shows predominantly adverse effects, such as the reenactment of morbid themes or situations (Cohen et al., 2010).
Treatment for psychological trauma remains complicated, even for adults and especially for children. Despite PTSD being widely studied in the area of clinical research, numerous children remain undiagnosed due to the lack of mental health professionals in their area, and generally, the inaccessibility of health resources. This is especially true in underdeveloped or war-torn countries whose health systems often cannot cope with the number of people needing treatment.
