Plan for Evaluating Noise Levels
Before the evaluation begins, it is vital to determine the type of information required. First, one must understand the purpose of the assessment, that is, compliance with OSHA noise regulations, noise control, hearing loss prevention, among others. Second, the sources of noise and their time of operation is also critical data to the person evaluating the noise levels. Third, information on the temporal pattern of sound (continuous, intermittent, variable, and impulse) is an essential factor for consideration during planning. Finally, one should identify the location of the exposed persons before they begin taking field measurements (OSHA, 2016).
Once you understand this information, the initial step will be to conduct a noise survey that determines if there is a noise problem and whether the company needs to perform further measurements. The second step, which determines the levels of noise exposure on a personal level, is dependent on noise survey data from the initial analysis. However, in case there are varying noise levels throughout the day, or if workers are mobile, the person evaluating will need to do noise dosimetry. This measurement type primarily entails using a noise dosimeter attached to an employee while storing information on the noise level and carrying out an averaging process.
Determining the Need for a Hearing Protection Program
Data from monitoring noise exposure levels is essential in determining if a company needs a hearing protection program. According to OSHA (2016), a company that identifies exposure at or above 85 decibels (dB) over eight working hours or permissible 90 dB over an 8-hour TWA must provide hearing protection to the employees.
