Global HIV and TB: Addressing Global Health Issues
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HIV and tuberculosis (TB) are the most fatal communicable diseases in the world today (CDC, 2017). The diseases are interrelated because TB is known to be the leading cause of death for people living with HIV (CDC, 2017). Global statistics show that in 2016, nearly 10.4 million people were infected with TB. Additionally, towards the end of 2016, 36.7 million people around the world were living with HIV (CDC, 2017). These statistics reveal the magnitude of global health concerns arising from HIV and TB.
Pregnant women and mothers living with HIV are a vulnerable population because of the health risks associated with the medical condition. The health risks that this group is prone to include: increased risk of TB, emotional distress, mother-child transmission of HIV, and maternal illness (Murphy et al., 2015). Due to the cultural issues involved in the global management of diseases, it is important to incorporate cultural preferences in the education, prevention, and treatment plan of HIV and TB.
