Abuse Prevention
Introduction
A single incidence of abuse is one too many and the greatest way of preventing abuse is by being aware of the practice. People should understand that they are not vulnerable or going through the issues alone (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2020). Hence, most global populations are suffering from abuse in various scenarios. Nurses have the liability of listening to the needs of their clients and they should not let their personal problems affect their work. For instance, the professionals should leave any kind of stress outside their patient’s door and concentrate on their health (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2020). Nurses should also device appropriate ways to address their clients to avoid abusive scenarios. While different people give various definitions for abuse, the actions are termed as ultimately demeaning to someone whether physically, emotionally or verbally. Nurses hold powerful positions in the lives of their patients and they should ensure their safety through protection from abuse (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2020). Hence, nurses need to practice to the standards of their profession by implementing the four components of a therapeutic relationship; power, trust, intimacy and respect by prioritizing their client’s needs.
Neglect
Abusive actions
Although the nurses attending to Scott are friendly, they do not offer maximum care to the patient. Knowing that Scott is suffering from cerebral palsy, the nurse does not assist him with eating and he ends up not eating (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2020). Also, the nurses do not consider his delay in speech.
Contributing factors
The nurse attending to Scott ignored the fact that he needed help with his tray while eating due to his condition. The nurses did not consider his slow rate of speech, whereby they should have taken more time to hear what he said whenever he tried to speak.
Impact on the patient
Scott feels decremented by the actions of the nurses. First, they address him like a person who cannot hear what they are saying, and he feels bad about it. Most of his needs are left unattended since the nurse does not take the appropriate time to listen to what the patient has to say, considering the condition of speech (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2005). Scott’s health is bound to be affected since he does not eat and as the action seems to occur consistently under the same care.
Key nurse responses
The nurse should have the basic knowledge and skills to offer the necessary and desired care to all patients, according to their health issues in an ethical manner. This situation could have been prevented through the implementation of good communication among nurses to enhance individualized care plans, as per the needs of each client.
Financial abuse
Abusive actions
The nurse discloses hid financial problems to Mr. Lee, a client he is offering health care at home. This nurse feels that he should not only help his patients but also his family (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2020). The consideration leads to the crossing of professional boundaries as Lee responds to the situation by offering to give his nurse money for assistance.
