Growing older seems scary -greying hair, dementia, crumples, and multiple chronic diseases. In reality, the aged are more prone to health issues, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Persons aged 65 and above have a high risk to mental impairment, physical injury, malnutrition, sensory impairments, deprived oral health, incontinence and constipation (Bergmark & Sedaghat, 2017). Thus, health promotion to the elderly improves their immunity, enhance self-care, and stimulate their social network.
Health providers play an essential role in sustaining a healthy ageing population. Health promotion is the foundation of geriatric medicine- and health providers, including nurses, have a vital role to play (Palfrey, 2018). While effectively implemented, health promotion improves a patient’s quality of life as well as longevity (Linnan et al., 2019). In the past week, I have encountered elderly suffering from severe health conditions such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, to mention a few. To improve their wellbeing, I have volunteered in advising them on the importance of embracing a modified lifestyle such as healthy diet and physical activity. Also, I have collaborated with other players such as caregivers, families, management, therapy teams, as well as the patient to increase the chance of patient recovery and independence.
On the other hand, social factors influence health outcomes such as illness, ability to perform daily activities, and premature death. Therefore, to achieve optimal and safe care, it is crucial to address these factors that contribute to health issues (Bergmark & Sedaghat, 2017).
