Quantitative Research Design
Quantitative research design is a research method that uses numerical data that is statistically analyzed to explain a specific phenomenon or to generalize it to a group of people. It is an objective method and relies on data collection through such means as surveys, questionnaires, and polls (Babbie, 2016). The aim of this research design is to determine the relationship between dependent and independent variables within a given population. Quantitative research can either be experimental in order to establish a cause for a certain phenomenon or descriptive which is non-experimental and seeks to answer questions such as who, what, where, when or how many.
In nursing, for instance, a case of the prevalence of diabetes among children could be studied using quantitative research design. This would take a non-experimental approach combining both descriptive and correlational aspects. The descriptive method would give information on the number of children affected, the onset of the condition as well as the localities with the highest number of cases of affected children. The correlational aspect will, on the other hand, provide existing information on diabetes in children such as the link with lifestyles or genetics (Bernard, 2013).
According to Creswell (2014), these research methods are appropriate as they are objective and will ensure that children are not subjected to unnecessary experiments. There is also no chance of manipulation of the variables making the findings acceptable scientifically. Data on the prevalence of diabetes among children can be used to determine the suitable kind of healthcare to be delivered to the patients. More priority can, therefore, be given to training nurses in special skills that are tailored for diabetic children. In addition, the regions with the highest number of recorded cases will be supplied with more medical resources and staff to help curb the disease.
Quantitative research adds value to the practice of nursing in a number of ways. Since it is unbiased, the implementation of the results from such findings can determine which issues to be given pri...
