Standards govern the exchange of information in the healthcare ecosystem as it is the norm in other industries. Standards primarily refer to the agreed-upon methods that connect systems. They may pertain to information transport, structure, security, or the implications of terms or codes. Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) are responsible for defining, maintaining, and updating the standards through a collaborative process that includes the subject audience (Groves et al., 2016). In the healthcare setting, Information standards incorporate protocols, terminologies, methods, and specifications for the assembly, storage, exchange, and recovery of information linked to healthcare applications such as medications, medical devices, and records. Therefore, this paper aims to conduct detailed research to determine the adequacy of the current healthcare information standards, the approaches of communicating updates to standards, and the preferred way of disbursing the said information.
Adequacy of the Current Information Standards
In determining the adequacy of the current information standards, several factors such as accuracy, quality, and cost-efficiency have to be put into considerations. In the context of accuracy, the current information standards have been known to reduce medical errors. This was proven through a study conducted in 1999 by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The study reported a gradual decrease in the number of deaths resulting from medical errors every year.
