Genetics refers to the study of the manner in which single genes play a role in the passing of traits from one generation to the other. It involves the study of a single gene and the primary DNA component of that particular gene. On the other hand, genomics focuses on the study of the whole organism. It is based on the analysis of the DNA that is present in one of the organism’s cells hence it is part of genetics. It helps a lot in the understanding of particular diseases (ACMG Board of Directors, 2017).
In the field of genomics, nurses can be involved in policy making because they focus on the main integral of genomics, which is disease prevention and the promotion of health. Given the fact that they have sufficient knowledge regarding the disease and family history of patients, then they can take part in genomics (Bogdan, Salmeron, Carey, Agrawal, Calhoun, Garavan & Kalin, 2017).
