Topic 1: Policy Involvement
The recent health care reforms have greatly transformed the role of many healthcare professionals, especially nurses. According to the Affordable care act of 2010, nurses are required to improve accessibility to health care services , taking up various leadership roles (Hassmiller & Reinhard, 2015). Health care reforms acknowledge the role of nurses in transforming the health care sector, to provide more accessible, high-quality care for patients (Hassmiller & Reinhard, 2015). However, outdated policies that limit nurses scope of practice needs to be reviewed, especially for advanced practice registered nurses.
The limited scope of practice affects nurses in many states, advanced practice nurses do not have the full authority to prescribe drugs, preventing them from delivering care efficiently (Mason, 2014). The changing nature of healthcare requires nurses to play multiple roles, there is a need to expand nurse’s scope of practice (Mason, 2014).
There is the need to review the current regulatory scheme to enable an advanced practice nurse practice based on the extent of their training and education. Policy changes need to uncouple APRN from physicians overseeing their practice. Despite the numerous efforts by stakeholders to improve access to services, current regulations in several states mandate that APRN to operate in collaboration with a supervising physician (Mason, 2014).
I support the move by the Institute of Medicine recommendations to expand the scope of practice for advanced practicing nurses. I would like to see changes in the laws governing the nursing practice whereby the laws would be amended to expand their scope of practice, especially in my state.
