Wind Turbines Killing Millions of Birds Every Year
The planet is experiencing devastating consequences of climate change, which has necessitated governments and businesses to undertake initiatives to find solutions to the problem. Climate change is associated with industrialization and developments in energy. As such, finding cleaner energy and attaining carbon neutrality seems to be the ultimate solution. However, many of the renewable energy alternatives have downsides, most of which were unexpected. This essay explores the consequences of wind turbines on bird and bat mortality. The argument is that wind turbines have become a critical concern for the bird population across the world.
For several decades, wind energy has become one of the most common alternative energy sources. As such, there has been a rapid spread of wind power, which has resulted in millions of birds being killed each year (Ferris, 2022). It can be argued that most critics of wind turbines have focused on such aspects as the noise produced by the turbines and blights on the landscape. The tides seem to be changing as new data emerges on the number of birds killed each year. In the United States, President Trump has accused the wind technology of "killing all the birds," and President Biden has been labeled "great bird slaughter" by the United States anti-renewables lobby (Ferris, 2022). These accusations on how serious the problem is, especially considering that birds are part of the ecosystem and their protection is part of being sustainable and environmental-friendly.
Some bird species are considered critically endangered, and others are often under protection. Multiple studies have been conducted to explore the effects of the concentration of wind turbines, the quality of bird species habitats, and the mortality rates of specified birds. A case study of the white-tailed eagle has been...
