Teaching the Creative Arts in my Kindergarten
The creative arts which are taught in the kindergarten include visual art, music, and drama. This type of education is relevant since it emphasizes on education that is more product-driven and hence, relevant to the progressive nature of the current world. The creative arts are meant to enhance children's imagination. As such, they engage the cognitive, social, language and physical domains of the child. It is necessary to appropriately administer creative arts to children because it helps in realizing the desired effectiveness. Eventually, the children would become intensive thinkers who can control their mental, emotional and physical capabilities.
In this particular kindergarten, the creative arts are taught once per week. As such, the subjects or activities being taught in the same keep fluctuating regarding schedule. If dancing is taught this week, children will have to learn painting in the next. There are times when teachers merge subjects which are related such as music, dancing, and other creative movements. The kindergarten also has crocodile castanets, tambourine, rhythm stick, straw pan pipes and small horns. The children are given the necessary equipment during the lesson, after which they return them to the teacher for proper storage. The most common methods used during the lessons are experimentation and free exploration. Particularly for visual arts, the children are encouraged to use their imagination. This causes them to draw and paint images based on what they see in daily life activities and what they could imagine. Ultimately, this boosts their creativity level.
As for crafts, the children are taught how to make different types of crafts. After observing, the children are taken through the step-by-step process of creation with the teacher's help. In this regard, the teacher has to be present to illustrate every move so that they can easily grasp the concept. It is this factor that has necessitated the need for more than one creative arts teacher and an assistant. As for drama, dancing and seeing, the teacher guides the ...
