Introduction
During this research, I interviewed two teachers with a different level of teaching experience to understand their experiences in this career. The first interviewee was Mary, she was a grade twelve teacher from Carnegie Vanguard High School, with the experience of twenty-six years teaching business. The second interviewee, John, he was a grade ten teacher with experience of seven years teaching technology at Mission San Jose High. The purpose of the research was to compare old teachers and young teachers.
When asked why she became a teacher, Mary said that her love for children and young students contributed to her becoming a teacher. Also, she added that her love for learning made her passionate about teaching. The second interviewee, John, said that he chose to teach because he was eager to make a difference in the lives of the young students. He said that students tend to remember their teachers after school is over and emphasized that he would want to be remembered by his students. Mary perceives teaching as a passion while the John perceives teaching as a service to the young students.
The first challenge that the Mary encountered when she first began teaching was communicating with parents. She explained that during her time technology had not been integrated into school systems and therefore communicating with parents was a big issue. Mary said that whenever she wanted to communicate with the guardians, she had to fill forms to gather information from them. The communication mechanism was not effective. While according to John the main challenge he encountered was adapting to class activities. He said students were accustomed to new technologies and were eager to acquire new skills and therefore, it was a challenge for him to keep students interested while learning.
Based on the roles that parents play the Mary said that previously, they could visit the school regularly to check the progress of their students. She said that guardians could attend conferences to build a strong bond with teachers and their children. She noted that parents no longer attend school meetings and conferences because they can interact with the teachers through digital gadgets.
