Sensationalized Media Student: Professor: Course title: Date: Sensationalized Media Crime: Derek Shrout is a self-proclaimed white supremacist who wanted to commit hate crimes at Russell County High School in Eastern Alabama. Part 1: Prepare an objective and factual report of the crime or court case. This part of the paper should be concise and unbiased, so use authentic law enforcement reports, if available. The crime case involved Derek Shrout, a 17-year old self-proclaimed white supremacist. According to Russell County’s law enforcement officers, the suspect had an intention of committing hate crimes using homemade explosives at Russel County High School. Shrout had drafted his plans of committing the crime on a book, which he had carelessly placed where it could be easily found. Unfortunately for him, the journal was found by one of the school’s teachers and Shrout’s plot was discovered early enough to avert a disaster (The Jawa Report, 2013). Police officials reported that the suspect’s book contained plans that looked similar to potential terrorist attacks as well as attacks of violence that posed grave danger on the school (DeLong, 2013). In his plans, Shrout was specifically targeting one teacher and six fellow students. Among those targeted, six were black and the only white male on the list was targeted because Shrout thought he was gay. According to investigators, Shrout started to write in his journal only three days after a teen gunman killed twenty children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14th 2012 (Osunsami, 2013). The teacher who found Shrout’s journal containing the bomb plot immediately informed the authorities. Consequently, the police searched the suspect’s house and found several tobacco containers that were filled with shrapnel.
