Part 1: Annotated Bibliography
Fitzpatrick, E. M., Hamel, C., Stevens, A., Pratt, M., Moher, D., Doucet, S. P. ... & Na, E. (2016). Sign language and spoken language for children with hearing loss: A systematic review. Pediatrics, 137(1). https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2015-1974.
In the article, the researchers were keen to establish the extent to which an intervention combining early sign language such as the American Sign Language with oral language could be considered more effective than an intervention composed solely of oral language in the spoken language development among children with permanent hearing loss. The researchers did not come to a definite conclusion on the use of a sign and oral language intervention being more effective than the use of oral language for the acquisition of spoken language among the children diagnosed with hearing loss. Notably, the lack of a conclusion on the comparison was attributed to absence of conclusive studies on the subject. The study is reliable as it was conducted by authors who are renowned researchers in the field of pediatrics. Further, the study is peer-reviewed and was featured in a reputable journal. The research will be of utility to my paper about ASL since it provides a context about the utility of American Sign Language as a foundation for the achievement of oral language for learners.

Independent reviewers were used to screen the various studies identified as relevant for inclusion.
The selection criteria used in the review involved a number of essential element. First, the studies were selection based on their study designs. Randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, and controlled clinical trials were included in the study. Second, the researcher included studies that examined children who were receiving early intervention following early onset of hearing loss. The population cutoff was 3 years. Third, studies that involved an intervention combining oral language and forms of Ame...
