Children from birth to 21 years who are Medi-Cal recipients can access services, screening and treatment as mandated by laws similar to newborns whose mothers are on Medi-Cal (Hill, Benatar, & Macri, 2012). Additionally, low income children under 19 years who are eligible and not enrolled can use the services of CHDP providers. The CHDP programs support disease prevention and health promotion efforts for infants and children in California. Children fully enrolled in the Medi-Cal enrolled are ineligible to partake in the CHDP Gateway Program. The program links preventive care to children who lack medical insurance, live in California, where they are from low income (200%) of the federal poverty level families and are 19 years and below.
Examination at kindergarten/ first grade
The first physical examination under the CHDP is conducted either 18 months before enrolling in the first grade or 90 days after entry (DHCS, 2016). To achieve this, the CHPD providers work together with families, offering assistance to undertake the health assessments. There are also checkups for the foster care children, those with development disabilities, children requiring sports physicals as well as children with perinatal problems.
