The Heinz Dilemma
In Europe, a woman was near death from a special kind of cancer. There was one drug that the doctors thought might save her. It was a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost him to make. He paid $400 for the radium and charged $4,000 for a small dose of the drug. The sick woman's husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money and tried every legal means, but he could only get together about $2,000, which is half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying, and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said, "No, I discovered the drug and I'm going to make money from if." So, having tried every legal means, Heinz gets desperate and considers breaking into the man's store to steal the drug for his wife. The responses to the questions proposed regarding moral dilemma on Heinz incidence should not be based on what the children should do but their reasoning rely on the justification for the action they take and every answer is normally based on an individual perspective. For example, according to the stages of moral development,
At age 1-5 years, children normally observe obedience and respect. The decision of what to do is normally dictated by the punishment as an impact. Therefore, children will strive to do what is right to avoid being punished by people in authority. Thus, Heinz should not go ahead and steal the medicine because the repercussion is that he will be jailed for the action. On the same note, Heinz will be wrong if he steals the drug since it shows disobedience. In addition, there is no obligation on stealing instead. At the age of 1-5 years, children’s obligations are to respect those who are powerful and do what is right (Khan Academy, 2014).
In stage two (5-10 year), children normally uphold self-interest. They have no respect for others' rights. However, they assume that they are in a position to gain more. Regarding the Heinz dilemma, he should go ahead and steal the medicine because he will be happier if he achieves his objective of saving his wife no matter the implications such as being sentenced to prison. Thus, they seem to have an obligation to steal the medicine to save a life and this happens even if Heinz wife were a stranger or a pet animal (Khan Academy, 2014).
