Before taking this course, I did consider the language level of my assessments. I understood that different language levels meant different levels of understanding of key concepts. Also, as Lenski, Ehlers-Zavala, Daniel, & Sun-Irminger (2006) indicate, ELLs are categorized into four groups and each has different language levels. For instance, those in the category of newly arrived with limited formal schooling “could have difficulty learning English” and since they belong to the beginners’ level, their assessment should be different from others.
Language can sometimes be a construct-irrelevant variance (CIV) in the assessment of ELLs because the types of language used may interfere with content assessment such that the assessments fail to test what they are intended to test. For instance, using “an abundance of idioms and figurative language in English texts” or “use of unfamiliar vocabulary” presents challenges to ELLs in reading (Haynes, n.d.).
