There are several ways in which schools can integrate culture theory into curriculum planning to promote a better understanding of other cultures for both teachers and students. One, schools can ensure that there is a sufficient degree of sensitivity to language, especially in terms of pronunciation, dialect, and grammar. Bennett (2007) posit that “students who speak ‘country’, African American vernacular, or any nonstandard dialect are often perceived as uneducated or less intelligent”(61). However, if schools include language sensitivity as part of the curriculum planning, such stereotypes based on dialect will be eliminated and students will be able to understand other cultures as well.
Two, schools should incorporate the social values of their students into their curriculum planning. As revealed by Bennett (2007), “social values are an important aspect of worldview” (66). They determine how people behave and it is important to understand that the values of a dominant cultu...
