1.) Print Convention.
a. The child grasps the connection between letters, the shape of letters, or groups of letters and the sounds they typically make phonics,
b. she or he will be able to how to interpret the letters and how to decode them directionally. English is read from left to right and top to bottom but other alphabets may be read from right to left.
2.) This is Alphabet and Phonological Awareness.
a. When the child learns sounding out words, he is able to assimilate meaning to what he is reading. This is also known as decoding.
b. As decoding becomes quicker and more natural, the child can shift his or her focus from sounding out words individually to understanding the meaning of what he or she is reading.
3.) Oral Language
a. Oral Vocabulary is the child’s capacity to recognize words through repetition and association with objects. The oral vocabulary partakes to the spoken vocabulary of the child’s which consists of the words that the child can recognize and articulate. It is essential to have a vast array of vocabulary in order to decode words.
b. through the accumulation of new words for vocabulary, the language skills of the child’s greatly expands.
4.) Decoding Skills
a. When a child can already recognize many words by hearing and naturally be able discern or simply decode what the word was.
b. decoding skill is about the capability of the child to properly interpret what is being said to them in order to gain a conducive comprehension of the content.
5.) oral vocabulary and other language skills.
a. Oral vocabulary is important to understand the text as a whole. By knowing language skills we can tell by the order of a sentence which words are nouns or verbs. This is especially useful for homophones or decoding unknown words.
6.) Background Knowledge.
a. the ability to connect a stimulus with background knowledge allows the child to expand the perspective upon any subject by comparing it to knowledge that he or she already knows.
