One of the main trends in public schooling is inclusive education that has seen more students with disabilities being educated in general classrooms. According to Danford (2014), inclusive education is “teaching against the grain,” where educators seek to challenge the common configurations of practices and beliefs that have been inherited in order to develop new modes of belief and practice. In this sense, inclusive education involves teachers trying to change the old values and attitudes that discriminate against students with disabilities. Furthermore, as informed by Danford (2014), it involves teachers fighting the “traditional structure of classrooms, of teachers' work, and the social role of students” (p.9). It is evident that inclusive education is more than just diverse students learning together in the same classroom. Educators have to not only change the traditional discriminatory attitudes towards students with disabilities, they also have to advocate for structures that support the learning of all students.
There exist tensions and challenges that hinder the implementation of inclusive education. Despite the growing acceptance towards inclusive education, Danford (2014) points out that educators are poorly prepared to succeed in the new configuration. In this sense, a key challenge is that many teachers are not ready to be part of inclusive education. In his decades of experience, Danford (2014) points out that almost all educators “spoke of feeling unprepared for teaching successfully in the new inclusive classrooms and schools” (p.3). Nevertheless, even if teachers are prepared, they often get frustrated by the school administration.
