McMannon uses a historical perspective to highlight that education outside and inside the school, where education serves individual and societal needs by imparting knowledge. Schooling is a lifelong process like education in schools, which are formal institutions, but formal schooling ends when students complete formal education. Learning allows students to advance their schooling as they gain more knowledge and skills. Education allows people to get the deeper meaning of certain material and they are socialized as members of society. Schools serve public purposes, but it is also important to renew education and even better prepare the educators to be relevant in the 21st century.
Education emphasizes certain parameters of culture, and education is oriented towards continuity as man lives from the environment and has innovated to be able to live there. Members of a society are bound together through a common cultural vision, but people have also adapted and changed where culture is transferred across generations. There are an extension and modification of knowledge, and sometimes learning from foreign cultural systems, which further results in cultural change. Both continuity and change are important as members of the society retain certain elements of their culture, but also incorporate new ones to thrive in society.
