ECONOMICS AFFECT EDUCATION SYSTEM
Introduction
Economics is more about allocation of resources while education is the act of gaining general knowledge and preparing oneself for a mature life. In education, the resources allocated are materials (books, furniture, chalks etc), time and labor, which is provided by teachers. In more developed countries, the education system is relatively more afficient than developing nations because of the stable economy. Nonetheless, economic crisis and war in poor countries has deeply hurt the provision of education and affected the ability of the system to operate. Therefore, the state of the economy in any country has a major effect on its education system. This is well demonstrated by the sharp difference in education systems of poor and developed countries. This paper seeks to analyze how economy affects education systems in poor and developed countries.
Economy is mostly affected by war which in turn affects the education system. Nigeria’s education system has been adversely affected because of the unending war between Boko Haram and the government. Boko Haram has been behind the destruction of over 2000 schools in Nigeria and the killing of hundreds of teachers and students (Onyemelukwe, 2017). The deteriorating economic status in Mali and Republic of Congo due to war has also paralyzed the education system. According to Tran (2013), almost 50 million students and young people staying in areas that are war zones do not have access to education services. In Syria, there are attacks on schools where teachers and buildings become target of attacks hence students fear going to school.
The economies of war-torn countries are so low that they cannot sustain the country’s population. The governments struggle to provide books and other learning materials, not mentioning class rooms. As noted by Ansell (2010), recurring war drains the economy which brings the education system to its baseline. A high percentage of national budgets focuses on public funding, which massively affect the education sector. Some poor countries have carried out general budget cuts to avoid high deficits. However, this has negatively affected teacher’s salary. Achieving universal access to quality education is a daunting task as their economies cannot provide sufficient funds, infrastructure and efficient human resource. Hence, education system in poor countries is not competitive due to its poor quality.
