The terms equity and equality are sometimes used interchangeably but there exists a significant difference between them. According to Bennett (2007), equity means “equal opportunities for all students to develop to their fullest potential” (14). The author differentiates it from equality, which means “sameness of result” (14). From the definitions of the terms, it is evident they differ from one another significantly. While equity aims to achieve fair and equal educational opportunities for all students, equality assumes that every student has equal learning opportunities. Bennett (2007) also points out that equity requires different treatment of students as per relevant differences.
