Part 1: Transitional Objects
A transitional object is any time that is comforting to a child, especially when the mother is not around. Moreover, a transitional object helps create the child-mother bond when the latter is not around. Adults also have transitional objects that may not be similar to those of children. Pets and precious possessions can be considered as transitional objects in adults. They are objects that bring comfort to an individual (Borenstein, 2019). A look at pets indicates the lifetime commitment that adults put in. A good case is where an adult can hug and toss a pet as a way of comfort. However, in this case, the concentration shall be on transitional objects in children.
Transitional objects are comforting to a child when the mother is not at a close range. From the age of one to three or four, children tend to hold particular objects dear to them. Transitional objects are useful in children when it comes to their developmental sequence. As a child is growing, there is a way that the mother tries to separate 'me' from 'not me' as evolution usually is taking place (Stagg et al., 2019). A child gets to choose a transitional object that would give them comfort and enjoy in place of the absence of the mother.
A Doll is an example of a transitional object that is held dear by many children. At the age of 1-3/4, children will always have a doll as a possession. It makes them feel comfortable when they may be upset or when they are in deep thoughts. When a child is seeking independence, they will always concentrate on their doll to be comforted. A Teddy bear is the other type of a transitional object. This transitional object is common in both a boy child and a male child (Borenstein, 2019). It is, however, essential to note that the teddy bears come in different colors. A boy child would be attracted to a teddy bear of a different color as compared to a girl child.
A blanket is the other common type of a transitional object held by a child or an adult dearly. A familiar story of a blanket as a transitional object is in the Peanuts Cartoon, where the character Linus carried the blanket all through. What Linus used to do is what is normal in the life of a child from the age of 1-3/4. Children find blankets as being comforting as they would cover themselves and get a good sleep when they are having unrelaxing moments (Stagg et al., 2019). A pet is also another type of transitional object that some children love. Some children do not fear pets like cats as they would carry them at any time and fondle them as they wish.
Transitional objects help a child when they are seeking their independence. At the ages of 3 upwards, a child tends to get separated from their parents as the need for independence grows. Such a stage becomes a daunting one emotionally as parents get it hard to deal with the emotions of their children. A child may be clingy at one minute while so independent at a later minute (Borenstein, 2019). Therefore, a transitional object comes in handy as it helps a child to develop emotionally.
Transitional objects are also a comforting item to a child. Toddlers between the ages of 1 and 2 are not in a good position to communicate. At...
