Differentiated Instruction
What is differentiated instruction?
Differentiated instruction refers to a framework used by teachers to teach different students in their classes. In this framework, teachers use different methods of teaching to teach the different students, and use different methods of grouping to ensure the needs of all students are addressed (Awofala & Lawani, 2018). It also involves ongoing assessment of learners to gauge the learners’ comprehension and change the mode of instruction if necessary.
Describe at least four significant ways in which differentiated instruction differs from traditional classroom instruction.
In traditional classroom instruction, whole-group instruction is used for teaching, using the same method of teaching for the entire class(Awofala & Lawani, 2018). Differentiated instruction utilizes various types of instruction, and the teacher designs the teaching methods to accommodate all learners.
Traditional classroom instruction is intended to meet the needs of middle level students (Awofala & Lawani, 2018). However, differentiated instruction allows the teacher to design lessons that reach out to students with different types of skills.
In a traditional classroom instruction, the teacher gives all learners the same assignment (Awofala & Lawani, 2018). In differentiated instruction, students are given different assignments depending on their interests and thinking styles and abilities.
In traditional instruction, student assessment is mainly through summative assessments (Awofala & Lawani, 2018). In differentiated instruction, formative assessments are used to evaluate the learners’ comprehension of abstract concepts and what needs to be improved to enhance their understanding.
How can teachers get to know their students? Make sure to include the three characteristics of students that are important for differentiating instruction and give at least two examples of how teachers can learn about each.
The three characteristics include the students’ interests, readiness, and learning profile. Readiness can be assessed by giving the learner a pre-test. Understanding students’ interests can be done through a questionnaire in which each learner fills their interests and hobbies (Magableh & Abdullah, 2020). Further, teachers can understand the learners’ learning profiles by observing the learners in class or ask them to fill questionnaires stating their preferred learning styles.

Explain why each of Ms. Hasbro's classroom practices listed below is not a differentiated practice.
Delivers instruction primarily by lecturing; this is a teacher-centered common in whole-group instruction (Ismajli & Imami-Morina, 2018). It fails to accommodate the learning styles of learners or meet all skill levels.
