Assessment provides parents and educators with crucial information on the development and growth of a child. Assessment is an ongoing process of gathering information about the behavior, development, and academic progress of children. This enables teachers to make informed decisions on some of the best techniques they can use to educate learners. Teachers can use a wide variety of techniques to evaluate, measure the progress of developing academic skills among the students. Assessment can also provide a record of growth and development in the following areas: approaches to learning, cognitive, motor, and language. There are times when a teacher might notice that a student has difficulties in engaging in group activities independently. In such a case a teacher should plan activities that can support the independence of the student. Assessment plays a crucial role in improving the quality of education and supporting children to achieve long-term goals.
There are several types of assessments that an educator can use to measure the level of development in students. The examples of evaluation include formative assessment, informal assessment, summative assessment, authentic assessment, and work-integrated assessment (Morrison, 2015). Formative assessment is a type of assessment whereby a teacher observes the actions of a student. These actions can be self-chosen or planned activities. Some of the examples of formative approaches include classroom polls, strategic questioning, analyzing the work of students, round-robin charts, and quizzes. Formative assessment is the most effective and reliable intervention for young children. On the other hand, a summative assessment gives a summary of the learning and development of a child at a particular point in time. Further, the work-integrated assessment allows children to pursue learning holistically without experiencing any restrictions that are enforced by subject boundaries (Morrison, 2015). This type of assessment allows children to attain basic learning tools.
Authentic assessment describes different forms of assessments that reflect the motivation, learning, attitudes, and achievements of a student based on classroom activities. There are numerous methods of authentic assessment. Some of these methods include observation, anecdotal records, running records, rating scale, checklist, portfolio, work sample, event sampling, and time sampling (Bredekamp 2012). Observation assists teachers to evaluate the behavior of children, document them, and make decisions. Event sampling enables teachers to record the behavior of children after attending certain events. Work sample shows the growth and achievement of a child. On the other hand, a checklist allows teachers to observe children easily especially what they are good at.
