Many societies around the world tend to discriminate against individuals with special needs. They are shunned by not only strangers but also family members and close friends and as such, forced to live in isolation. The same case applies to children such as Thomas with cerebral palsy who are secluded from their peers in classrooms and also at the playgrounds. Parents to these children are often overprotective and while that is understandable, they often contribute to their seclusion and isolation in society. Based on the reading, there are various take-away points that range from the benefits of inclusion of special needs children in normal classrooms and the learning environment to impacts of the initiative.
I strongly believe that including children such as Thomas with various special needs in normal classrooms will help in their growth and development. They are exposed to the same environment as other children without disabilities and will be driven to push themselves to excel not only in academics but also socially. Unlike being exposed in special schools where their curriculums limit some activities, Thomas will be part of standardized learning. He will watch and learn how the normal children play and perform such activities and try to imitate them on his own way. It is also my belief that through the inclusive education, Thomas and the other special needs students will benefit from increased parent participation. As it was identified in the reading, parents to the different children were present in the classrooms and watched as they interacted with one another (Belkin, 2004). They also learnt how the teachers managed their learning. It is crucial for parents to be majorly involved in the lives of children such as Thomas because they provide much-needed emotional support and aid in their acceptance in society.
