I often struggle to find a balance between the intense academic programs across the semester and attending to personal needs or at least paying attention to my well-being while pursuing my academic goals. It is for such reasons that I would find myself in foul moods and suffering from burn-out or exhaustion from lack of sleep and enough rests in pursuit of academic excellence. It is not that I never have time to rest or take a stroll when in need of a few moments to myself but due to the lack of an effective strategy to reach and maintain a balance between academic demands and attending to my body’s health needs or overall well-being of the self. However, enrolling in the yoga class provided a holistic approach towards achieving the said balance through the wide range of benefits accrued throughout the semester.
I first sought to increase abdominal strength while also increasing my body’s flexibility through the Boat pose in the yoga class. The seated pose further strengthened my hips and stretched my backbone reducing backaches, which helped in relaxation and reducing stress. The increased flexibility from the Boat pose prepared me for another yoga pose to enhance my muscle tone. The Chair pose functioned to improve the muscle tone of my lower back as well as strengthening the calf, ankle, and thigh muscles. The pose helped in relaxation of the muscles as well as stretching of both my chest and shoulders for increased relaxation.
