Transition into the outside world away the parents' often necessitates that young adults live alone or with roommates. This is a time that they have control over their lives and are more independent. Older adults may also live with other roommates because of circumstances, like when rent is expensive and living with roommates is the best option available (Raymo, 2015). Living with a stranger can be terrifying when you do not know anything about them, and it is easier when one has to deal with those they are familiar with. When you live with roommates, they know more about your life and it is necessary to share things including bathrooms and kitchens. Before deciding whether to live with roommates or alone, it is necessary to set priorities and evaluate the pros and cons of each option depending on the circumstances. Living alone is better than living with roommates as there is independence, privacy, one can live how they want and know who visits their residence.

For young college graduates living with fellow students to split the rent is common, but for those employed or with children this is potentially more challenging. Regardless of whether you are living alone or with roommates you should budget and track your spending (Freedman, 2015). It is an uncertain world living with roommates or living alone, but since one has to learn to be independent it is better to live alone. When people live with roommates it is likely that some will take advantage of the situation and fail to pay their share of expenses or share the responsibilities. However, when you live alone, you are sure when something goes wrong it is your mistake or omission.
