In pursuit of my profession in human service, I have attended two schools so far, both providing students with expertise required for offering services in various fields such as addiction and or mental health counseling, advocacy for family services, specialists for children welfare, sociologist, healthcare assistant and career counselor. For my case, in the school, I chose to take the whole course while learning all the units above in order to obtain maximum skills and increase my chances of qualifying for the profession and getting a job. After taking the courses and completing them successfully, I did some work before joining college. Some of the work I did included being a healthcare assistant in a regional healthcare center in my city and, a healthcare consultant for patients and a part time career consultant for my family, relatives and friends, just to gauge how good my studies were. Therefore, my primary goal for taking the bachelors ‘degree in human service is to attain my lifelong goal of being a professional in advocacy service provision and counseling as well as become a role model and nurture two of my family members who opted out of their decisions to take the course following my advice.
My degree plan ultimately reflects on my background because after working at the health facility for one and a half years, alongside being an advisor and counselor in my family, I realized that I needed more essential skills to make it in the field. The decision for applying for the course in the college was also facilitated by my role model who, agreeably, I saw that he had more skills than me and that was the reason why he was always swift and successful as an advocate and counselor. Thereupon, I decided that I would enroll for a bachelors’ degree in human service in the college where my full potential will be realized, nurtured and perfected by instructors who have and are still active in the field of my profession.
Human service is primarily about identifying populations in need of assistance and offering them the help. For my case, I have been working at a health center where majority of the people are patients whose obligation is to be attended to and assisted in various ways concerning their health. I have come in contact with the head of the facility who, in addition to his degree in heath provision, he has a degree in human service. Moreover, my mentor has a degree in the field alongside having all the additional required skills. Therefore, having worked with the two individuals in one way of the other, I have gauged my previous learning and education in earlier schools and I am certain that I meet all the requirements needed to take the course. Some of these requirements include proper communication skills, effective mode of contact and association with the people in need as well as other remainder technical skills in sociology and psychology taught at ESC.
