Pursuit of Happiness Analysis. Creative Writing Essay

Essay Instructions:

Several writers have reflected on the phenomenon that we cease being happy the instant we realize we’re happy.
See Csikszentmihalyi, paragraph 16 (excerpt, page 547), and Kingwell, quoting John Stuart Mill in paragraph 5 (excerpt, page 531) (Kingwell also quotes Eric Hopffer, who claims that searching for happiness brings unhappiness.)

Do you agree? Can you be happy and know you’re happy?
Develop your analysis of this question drawing on the sources in the chapter, anecdotes from your own previous experience, and use one additional source.
Consider both Cskiszentmihalyi and Kingwell and their perspectives on happiness as you develop your own opinion, which you will articulate in your thesis. Your task in writing an analysis of happiness is to answer the question: do we cease to be happy the instant we realize we’re happy?
What do you think? Include relevant information the sources in the excerpted chapter on happiness; also draw on your own life experience, and use one additional source as you provide evidence to support your claim.

The main goal for many individuals is to be truly happy. What makes one person happy might not be the same thing that makes another person happy. The search for happiness involves improving positive emotions. However, positive emotions have an upper limit, and at that point, the person will feel defective or discouraged. Csikszentmihalyi reveals that “when we are in flow, we are not happy, because to experience happiness, we must focus on our inner states” (Behrens & Rosen, 2016, p. 547). The only way to be happy is when we are focused on a specific task. Based on my personal experience, I wanted a new phone. However, the cost was very high, and I reasoned that once I purchase it, I will have achieved a significant milestone in my life. However, once I had the phone, I lost interest in it after several months. Happiness tends to be a momentary event. It can arise when we feel contented about marriage or having a meal or even feeling well-rested (Behrens & Rosen, 2016). Happiness depends on external circumstances, and this is a reason why it tends to be temporary. Once we are happy, we begin to reason about what we can attain to be happier, and this leads to sadness.
