Police brutality has been documented worldwide. The police force is supposed to be the hope of many people because their primary duty is to terminate the rising number of crimes worldwide. However, it turns out that the police contribute to the increase in the crime rate. The reforms and the factors have contradicted one another, thereby failing to show an actual change. Thus, to make a real change, re-creation of the system must be advocated.
One of the advocates is Mariame Kaba, an organizer against criminalization. The advocate suggests that police brutality and violence resulted from its tolerance; thus, the only way to completely eradicate it or reduce it to a certain degree is to decrease the police force’s interaction with the public. This is because Kaba realized that liberal solutions could never reform the police because of its long history of aggressions secondary to existing prejudices then and now (Kaba, 2020).
Kaba (2020) explained that the police force could not recreate a safe society where people could live with freedom and pure happiness because of the injustices that many people, including the police, tolerate. For instance, they perpetuated violence against African-Americans since the beginning of time. During the 1700s to 1800s, when slavery was rampant, and many slaves acted to fight for their rights as human beings, the police were the primary individuals who helped silence them. These “peacekeepers” delineated peace as a function of social class, and they helped abolish riots and labor strikes that threaten the safety of the elite (Kaba, 2020).
