Non-traditional health care models are fast becoming mainstream in primary care with the increase cost of health care, decreased ease of accessing care, and the increasing need for convenience among consumers. Examples of the new non-traditional provider models common today include telemedicine, home visits, retail health clinics, free-standing emergency departments, remote patient monitoring and self-diagnostic tools that have ensured convenience, affordability and improved access to health care (Cigna.com, 2015).
