Describe a time when you gave back to the community. To what extent do you think your actions have impacted the community?

Throughout entire lives, from childhood to adulthood, the community has played a crucial part in daily existences. Although some may think it to be irrelevant, its impacts can be felt. However, in rural areas and inner cities, the community is essential for one to imagine. Volunteering to care for the elderly or organizing activities for boy scouts, among others, can be done in a community to help people improve their lives in one way or another. After I finished college, I participated in a volunteering mission in Africa, teaching English at a local school in South Africa, Lesotho.
I have always believed that education is an essential element that helps not only children but also adults to plan for their lives. African children do not have better resources, such as teachers, to teach young children basic English. However, children at a younger age need better education to understand specific education grounds. Being a teacher by profession, I decided to join a campaign funded by the state to go and help them learn English to help them express themselves when they grow up. Seeing the kids’ motivation and eagerness to learn inspired me to join the campaign, which has always been my desire.
As an American, I usually feel perturbed when I see some African refugees in America unable to communicate in English. In the 21st century, I find no reason why people should not be communicating in English, yet it is a noble language. However, I concluded that starting from the grassroots teaching would produce English speakers because it is easier to teach a child to know something than an adult (Power et al., 2019). Besides, the child prefrontal cortex of the brain, where memory is stored in adults, gives adults functional fixedness and thus makes them see everything exactly the way it is. In this case, they become origin, while children are susceptible and thus they would be able to learn and practice something new faster than adults.
Although most South African countries are English speakers, according to research, it was essential to extending the campaign to rural areas since young children need to be conversant with it as they grow (Carter et al., 2021).
