* Bakersfield, California is located in the southern area of San Joaquin Valley. Tehachapi Mountains, Temblor Range, Sequoia National Forest, and San Andreas Fault surround the city.
* The total area of this city is 143.6 sq. mi which comprises 1.4 sq. .mi of water; The valley is 2,000 to 6,000 ft in elevation, 450 mi long and 40 to 60 miles wide.
* San Joaquin Valley is known for its agricultural aspect and is a part of Central Valley which is considered as one of the biggest structural depressions globally.
Pollutants and Sources
* Pollutants in the area are ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter. Vertical mixing and horizontal mixing are ways that pollutants are dispersed.
* Ozone comes naturally or may also be a result of human activities. This is a main component of smog. Ozone concentrations in California were found to be highest in Bakersfield and Fresno.
* Carbon monoxide is a result of the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and also smoke-producing cars in the cities.
* Nitrogen oxides come from combustion processes and contribute to smog formation. These can also cause adverse health issues.
* Sulfur dioxide is from burning coals and it increases acid deposition.
* Small particles such as smoke, fumes, and mists.and high rate of emission composition are air pollutants and may have adverse effects depending on the intensity of exposure.
* Man-made configuration to the environment, railroads contribute to the pollutants and their transport.
