Being a future leader requires more than just the capacity to turn goals into realities. Instead, a leader must also have a steadfast moral code that would allow him to make rational decisions, especially when faced with an ethical crisis. Accordingly, an individual’s moral compass is the set of beliefs or ideas that would help him distinguish what is right and wrong using his own virtues. In this article, let us look at the concept of a moral compass as well as why it is essential to have it as a future business leader.
Personal Integrity Statement
Different individuals have different kinds of moral compasses. Due to the inherent differences in terms of culture, religion, ethnicity, and personality, among others, what seems to be right for one might not be the same for another. Nonetheless, different moral compasses also have their own core similarities. These similarities that everyone upholds are some of the foundations of what society would generally call as ‘moral uprightness’ or ‘moral principles’. For example, even if the concept of ‘fair wages’ must differ from one person to the other, outright slavery is something that every individual consider to be immoral. In other words, this shows that some core principles exist as foundations of individuals’ moral compasses.
Personally speaking, I believe that my moral compass is primarily based on two things (1) our Christian traditions and (2) my family’s teachings. On the one hand, since I was born in a Christian family who devotes a lot of time in church services when I was young, I learnt the values of being fair, helpful, and empathetic towards other people. This includes helping others and balancing my dreams or goals with the effects of my actions on other people. On the other hand, my family’s upbringing has taught me how to be ‘socially aware’ of the different norms, emotions, or circumstances that are happening in society. My mom told me that being socially aware would help me not only achieve my dreams but also in establishing good and strong relationships with other people.
Moral Compass
As stated earlier, I believe that my moral compass was built around my personal upbringing. In this section, I would like to discuss some of the elements of my moral compass as well as how each of them was shaped with my experiences in life.
Moral Vision
I believe that a good life is one whereby I can achieve my dreams of being successful while still having a strong and healthy relationship with the ones that I value most. This moral vision in life is something that helps me balance my dreams with the values that I learnt from my family. On the one hand, my idea of success was built from my desire to give my parents a good life. Ever since I was a kid, they have worked hard just to support my schooling. Thus, as I grew up, I wanted to give them a life where they wouldn’t need to sacrifice anymore for our needs and enjoy themselves.
