The community has experienced several incidents of violence, drive-by shooting, increased drug trafficking, and efforts to enroll new gang members in the domestic middle and high schools. Increased patrols and arrests within the region are short-term solutions, and a long-term plan to address the issue is required. Implementing several initiatives would play a significant role in rectifying the issue of gang-related behaviors. The initiatives would include educational, local, and family initiatives that can teach the youths the required skills and attitudes to resist the pressure of engaging in gang-related behaviors and avoiding scenarios that can lead to violence.
Educational initiatives like after-school programs can help keep children busy after school hours by engaging in productive activities that prevent them from gang involvement or participating in activities that can lead to violence. Some after-school programs include story writing, art, and cooking, to mention a few. Also, society can implement some community-based activities to help children make better decisions instead of participating in activities that can lead to arrest or even death. Some of these local activities include volunteer work, cleaning, and organizing games. Family initiatives are another significant initiative that should be implemented since many parents are busy at work and spend little time with their children, allowing them to hang out with the bad company and get into trouble (WHO, 2019). Family members should love each other and solve any issues, whether personal or school related. As a police chief, I would plan specific nights where family members meet and engage in fun activities while giving children a chance to learn from the people surrounding them.
Violence has multiple negative effects on children. Many children are exposed to violence from crime or abuse in their homesteads, school surroundings, and the community. Children who witness violence or are the victims of violence will portray aggressive behaviors that result in bullying other students and starting fights in school. Also, their aggressive behaviors might contribute to participation in criminal activities later in life (Berson et al., 2020). Ways to lessen the effects of violence on children is watching the surrounding and ensuring children are absent when fights occur or parents argue with each other. Intervention is another method of lessening the negative effects of violence on children.
