Pragmatically, colonialism shed light to the developing countries. If at all these countries had not been colonized, there would be no major developments witnessed. However, critics such as Rodney (1973), state that African countries, which were mostly affected were only developed in dependency and underdevelopment, during the colonial era.
Despite this, colonial powers played a big role in enlightening inhabitants of the colonized regions. In addition, a lot was achieved by the colonized countries - both intellectual and material developments in colonized countries were evident. According to Obadina (2000), through colonialism, education was achieved; hence barbaric practices and other inhumane factors were suppressed. Following this reasons, the inhabitants of the colonized countries, who possessed limited understanding and control of their physical environment gained insight. Above all, colonization effects united communities, linking them up to contemporary nation-states; hence, providing them with greater opportunity for survival purposes in the competitive world.
