Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to seek permission to change my degree major. I am a second-year student pursuing Bachelors of Science degree majoring in mathematics; I would like to change and major in statistics. After reviewing my performance in the first semester, I am seeking to change my major because I feel overwhelmed in class, mathematics is becoming more challenging. I have always enjoyed math, and I am accustomed to getting good grades while in high school which is why I decided to major in mathematics. Now that I am pursuing this course, I have come to realize that degree level mathematics is not what I had expected.
Mathematics is a vast subject majorly divided into two parts, theoretical and applied math. Applied math is about predicting and explain things in the real world. However, theoretical math is very different from what I learned in high school. Theoretical math is more complex and requires an in-depth understanding of different theorems that should be accompanied by proof. Even though I am good at calculus, I have not been able to understand other mathematical concepts. The abstract concepts and the proofs are not easy to grasp. I scored a 3.666 in my first semester; while my GPA is not bad I know I have the potential to do better. Unfortunately, I cannot cope with the high levels of intuitiveness required in mathematics.
