For this final short essay, consider the ways in which algorithms and networked society may or may nothinder projects of human liberation. Do algorithms help us determine what we want? Does networkedsociety imply surveillance? What is lost or gained in granting control to vast projects of design? Draw onthe final week’s materials (Deleuze, Tufecki, The Hidden Brain, Ruha Benjamin, and related materials) toput your ideas forward. There are no wrong answers. The dangers of algorithms and networked society
The society keeps on transforming to conform to recent technological advancements. Computers have been central to the technological revolution, shaping society in a certain direction. No doubt exists that the world has become a “global village” thanks to networking. An individual in one part of the world can be aware of developments in another part, due to the strong network that exists. While algorithms and networked societies are critical, they have served to hinder human liberation through censorship, hence controlling how people should think, behave, and act.
The Internet is meant to offer a decentralized approach to sharing information, hence allowing people to be free. Gilles Deleuze, in his article, “Postscript on the Societies of Control” demonstrates how disciplinary societies institute a closed system where people are restricted. Such societies ensure that “The individual never ceases passing from one closed environment to another…” (Deleuze, 1992, Pg. 3). One would imagine that algorithms and networked societies would liberate individuals from such closed societies. On the contrary, a report by the Observer Research Foundation (2014) indicates that social media is “swayed less by ideology and more by commercial interests.”
