Project Censored: Find Your Own Censored News Story

Essay Instructions:

MECHANICS:
o Paper must be typed 2-3 single spaced pages.
o You will place your sources first. The essay will follow. (Think of this as a reverse of standard citation guidelines).
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF STEPS:
1) FIND YOUR OWN “CENSORED” NEWS STORY: Please remember that these stories will be judged on their importance to citizens in a democratic society. Ask yourself: How does NOT having this information affect citizens who live in a democratic society? What are the social and political implications for NOT knowing about your topic?
Finding a “censored” news story can be accomplished in a number of ways. I suggest looking at sites such as Democracy Now, The Dredge Report, The Weekly Standard, Nation of Change, Mother Jones, Human Events, Human Rights Watch, Z Magazine,Nation of Change, The Nation, and Truthout.org to begin (some of these can be found in print or on-line, most often both). There are countless other alternative news sites from a variety of political perspectives.
Several international newspapers have an English version available: La Monde (France), The Guardian (England), even El Jazzera has an English edition.
I also recommend that if you have an idea, follow your own thread of inquiry using Google or other data bases such as Lexus/Nexus.
Look at the sources used for the stories in Ch. 1 of the PC Text for more ideas.
Some topics I am concerned about: Halliburton Corporation, Blackwater Private Military Corporation, Private Prisons/Detention Centers (i.e. CCA Corporation), Sexual Assault of U.S. Military Women, Lobbyists, Internet Neutrality, Health Care, U.S. Military Veteran’s benefits and health care, Wall Street and Deregulation, Global Warming, and Depleted Uranium- to name a few.
I am particularly interested in U.S. Detention Centers (I suggest going to YouTube: Hutto Detention Center, Texas to begin this search)
YOU MUST FIND AT LEAST TWO SOURCES THAT DISCUSS THE ISSUE/EVENT IN ORDER TO SUPPORT YOUR STORY. HOWEVER, THE MORE SOURCES YOU CAN PROVIDE THAT FOCUS ON THE ISSUE THE MORE LEGITIMACY YOUR STORY MAY HAVE.
YOU CANNOT USE STORIES FROM THE PROJECT CENSORED TEXT!!
YOU NEED TO FIND YOUR OWN.
YOUR PAPER SHOULD BE FORMATED IN THE SAME MANNER AS THE STORIES IN THE “PROJECT CENSORED” TEXT. (THE SOURCES YOU USE SHOULD APPEAR IN THE FRONT OF YOUR PAPER BEFORE THE ANALYSIS)
2) WRITE AN ESSAY – DESCRIBE, ANALYZE, EXPLAIN, & REACT:
A) BRIEFLY DESCRIBE the issue/event (THIS PAPER IS NOT TO BE JUST A SYNOPSIS OF THE STORY). The larger part of this essay needs to focus on your analysis, explanation, and reaction to the story.
B) ANALYZE THE STORY using concepts from the readings/lecture from class (Note: You do NOT need to use the “critical process” from other assignments)
A) Explain why you think this is a censored news story (Here too, you will use concepts from the readings/lecture). How does it impact citizens in a democratic society?
B) Provide your Reaction to the story and to the assignment.
Note: Remember, there are a number of steps in this essay: Briefly, Describe the story/issue, Analyze, Explain why story is censored, and React to the assignment and story.
USE AT LEAST THREE CONCEPTS FROM READINGS/LECTURE FROM THE JOURNALISM UNIT. BE SURE TO FIRST EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT, APPLY IT TO THE ANALYSIS/EXPLANATION AND CLEARLY LABEL IT. IN OTHER WORDS, JUST “DROPPING IN” CONCEPTS WITHOUT FIRST EXPLAINING THEM AND APPLYING THEM WILL RESULT IN A SCORE OF ZERO.
Here are a few concepts for this last part: Ethnocentrism, Individualism, Responsible capitalism, Responsible institutions, Bias toward suburbia, patriotism and the spiral of silence, media literacy.
Also, for sources, I put 4, but just put as many sources as you have used.

Introduction
Censorship can be defined as the control of information circulating in the society. Not all censorship arises from the government and media; people do self-censoring all the time. Due to censorship by the mainstream media stories that influence the society, project censor was founded. Project Censor was founded by Professor Carl Jensen of Sonoma State University in 1976. He argued that censorship by the media itself and not the government was represented by the failure of the media to pursue and promote stories and so he posted ten biggest stories ignored or under-reported by the media annually. He defined censorship as the suppression of information, either purposeful or stories that are underreported, have bias or important facts omitted, or self-censorship, which will distort the information that reaches the public. There are various reasons why stories are censored and this censorship has its impacts on people in any given democratic society.
Rape crisis in U.S. prisons is widespread, and it is an issue that has been censored for a very long time now. Both the media and the government have not been informing the public about the widespread occurrence that is now common in the United States' correctional facilities. Official reports that are released are not factual and the numbers are reduced to cover the prisoner-on-prisoner sexual abuse that has for long now affected most of the prisons in the U.S. The perpetrators of this uncouth act walk scot free even after beating and injuring the victims. To some extreme extends, victims are beaten to death. The government has put no measures in place to neither prevent this vise nor punish the offenders (Saum et al., 1995)
According to a survey entitled No Escape: Male Rape in U.S. Prisons conducted by Human Right Watch, the state authorities are responsible for the ...
