Louis Armstrong contributed to jazz music by inventing measures to take his music to another level. He was born in 1901 in New Orleans and died in 1971. He is considered as the most influential artist of jazz music in the United States of America. He was an actor, composer, trumpeter, scriptwriter, and a vocalist. He outshone his colleagues and mentors. Armstrong started his career in the 1920’s by involving himself in trumpet and cornet playing. He was born and raised in a poor environment after his father abandoned the family immediately. Louis Armstrong was ever left under his maternal grandmother’s care. He was obligated to start his career after dropping out of school in grade five. His fame commenced at the age of nineteen years.
Armstrong received encouragement from the Jewish family he worked for. After shooting on-air, being arrested, and taken to children’s homes, he interacted with several musical instruments. His desire to become a musician developed after he joined his mentor King Oliver (Hobson, 2018). Armstrong did his first song recording in 1923, a solo song known as Chimes Blue. He later joined several bands, Creole Jazz Band being the first band after he received a call to participate by King Oliver. The second band was Fletcher Henderson’s Orchestra. Hobson, changing of Henderson band to the most prominent jazz band in the United States of America was influenced by Armstrong’s swinging vocabulary (2018). Some of the songs recorded include; “Nobody knows the trouble I have seen,” “Ain’t Misbehaving,” “Georgia on My Mind,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “When You Are Smiling,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Jeepers Creepers” among others.
Louis Armstrong is believed to have made a lot of changes in jazz music. Through his potential and essential skills, scholars, critics, and fans recommended him as the most excellent soloist. He concentrated on shifting jazz music from collective improvisation to solo performance. He had a renowned type of voice, wealthy and recognizable through a charismatic stage presence, which captured his audience’s attention (Hobson, 2018: Lewis, 2018).
