What does the Islamic State Hope to Achieve?
A key issue that has characterised international relations recently is the rise of extremist groups in the Middle East. The Islamic State is the largest of these groups and its continued expansion is a cause for concern, particularly for the West. According to Antunes and Camisão (2017), the Islamic State is “a militant group that follows a fundamentalist doctrine of Sunni Islam” (p.19). It is led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who is also a ‘caliph’. The group has been responsible for a number of attacks in cities in Western nations such as Paris, Manchester, and Melbourne (Antunes & Camisão, 2017). As informed by Antunes and Camisão (2017), it is the intent of the group to create an Islamic State and to prevent the regional powers from interfering with the process. This paper argues that the Islamic State hopes to establish a Caliphate and to spread Islam worldwide.
The major goal of the militant group is the establishment of an Islamic State (a Caliphate). As informed by Antunes and Camisão (2017), the group aims to establish the state in cultural, political, and geopolitical terms. It is thus deducible that the group aims to use the Islamic religion to advance its cause. According to Poirson (2014), it is the belief of Political Islamic movements that Islam has a built-in political system that should be upheld and adhered to by every believer.
