1. What surprised Gуmez-Peсa and Fusco when they began their Couple in the Cage project?
The intention of the artist in this case was to create a satirical commentary on the notion of what he had discovered but they were shocked to realize that most of the viewers that they targeted believed the fiction and soon considered the artists to be real savages. The artists recorded the experienced they got when interacting with their audiences in four different countries, and it dramatizes the dilemma of cross-cultural misunderstanding which is common in the society that we live in today. The experiences they recorded are interwoven with archival footage of rather ethnographic displays borrowed from the past, and this helps in giving a historical dimension to the social experiment that was conducted by the artists. As such, this turn of events makes The Couple in the Cage a powerful blend of poignant reflection on the morality surrounding treating people as exotic beings and comic fiction.
2. How do you think their performance would be received differently today vs. the early 1990s? Would audiences respond similarly?
I think the performance would receive a different reaction from what it received during the early 1990s.
